THIS STATE OF THE ART £11 MILLION FACILITY was created to serve as the operating base for three maritime reserve units – HMS Cambria, the Royal Marines Reserve Detachment Cardiff and Wales’ University Royal Naval Unit. It replaces a 40-year-old facility in Penarth with several training and classroom suites, a fitness room, administrative facilities, accommodation for up to 50 people and a large multi-purpose dining room. One of the challenges RACS faced was the location of the training kitchen on the first floor. With a lift not at that time commissioned, the equipment had to be lifted via a temporary site hoist one piece at a time; a time consuming and tricky operation. The second challenge was that all stainless had to be manufactured from a special grade of stainless steel due to the building overlooking a dock
This is because the corrosive seaside atmosphere would have caused rust if ‘traditional’ steel had been utilised. Upon completion, Phill Church (Morgan Sindall’s Supply Chain Manager) provided RACS with positive feedback:
"Just a quick message of thanks on behalf of Morgan Sindall Construction, to all of your staff who supported us in the delivery of the Catering Equipment on our recent HMS Cambria Project in Cardiff Bay. We were impressed with the quality and delivery of the scheme and your performance KPI's reflect this, with scores well above our targeted benchmark. Please pass on our regards to all those on site that installed the equipment in a professional, expedient and safe manner. We look forward to working with you again in the very near future."
CELTIC MINOR GOLF CLUB in the heart of the Brecon Beacons was established in early 2015 from a land purchase by Tir Canol Holdings. This is a purpose built wedding venue which has the most incredible panoramic views overlooking the Swansea Valleys. The owners approached RACS to request assistance with the kitchen and bar layout design to enable them to have one kitchen that would accommodate two floors.
The ground floor is used for day-to-day club members with a space for small parties and the first floor is utilised as the main function room. RACS carefully selected a bespoke extract system to accommodate the cooking equipment; this included a 10 grid combination oven, induction range, fryer and grill as well as warewashing equipment and ample undercounter bar refrigeration to suit the application.
Heron Tower, Bishopsgate is situated within the biggest commuter hub in the City of London and has transformed the skyline of London at 230 metres tall. RACS were engaged to produce a bespoke catering facility which was to be located on the 11th floor and would enable high profile companies to facilitate and accommodate their clients’ requirements.
After careful logistical planning and skilful coordination between RACS and Skanska Construction, a bespoke and fully equipped re-heat kitchen using a mixture of state-of-the-art appliances such as induction hobs, combination ovens and conventional kitchen equipment was handed over to the client; all in keeping with its surroundings.
CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW FIRE STATION BUILDING was a £1.6m scheme involving the demolition of the existing fire station. Located at the existing fire station in Trefechan, the new two-storey building provides offices, meeting rooms, store rooms, entrance lobby, community room, kitchen (for the fire-fighters use), watch room, operations and training space.
RACS worked with the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service to provide advice on how to best make use of the space available to accommodate the commercial kitchen and servery counter. Our subsequent layout and design was accepted. WRW Construction were appointed as the main contractor, they in turn appointed RACS for the supply and fit-out works, the net result is a Fire Station, Aberystwyth can be proud of.
